05/02/2007: "Nature's Wake Up Call"

4:30 in the morning is an awful time to wake up, especially when you don't have to be anywhere or do anything that requires you to get up that early. But tell that to my little red breasted feathery friend who thinks that 4:30 in the morning is the greatest time of the day and that everyone should know it. I'm laying in bed trying to sleep while he's outside singing his little heart out, happy as can be that the new day is here and that he and his family are alive and well.

I know he has a family because I've seen him and his mate carrying worms to them in the shrub across the street. They've decided that the worms in my yard are the best in the neighborhood and that they are going to raise their young on them. That's cool. Thank you for choosing my fine cuisine. I know you want to pay me back for providing this nourishment for you and your family, but you don't have to do it at 4:30 in the morning.

Is he around when the sun goes down each evening? No, he's not. Why not sing to me then. I'd be much more appreciative at that time. I know that you like to sing to the sunset. Maybe he's singing to someone else then. I don't know. I just know that my yard is where he's chosen to sing in the morning, and I'm just going to have to live with it.

It sure is a pretty song though.

Steven: Great story. We have a similar one. Living in Banning California, on a golf course, many, many trees and my wife asked that we get some wild bird seed. Well one feeder lead to another, and now many many feeders for all the birds, sparrows, doves, finches, wild canaries, hummingbirds, and even a mom and dad mallard. We have a whole choir.

Steven - cute and funny story. birds, gotta love 'em. we had a similar experience 5 years ago right after we moved into our house. some mockingbird with way too much caffine would start singing about 3 or so in the morning right outside our bedroom. this went on for a few weeks before he finally found a mate or gave up, i assume. there have been others, but none as industrious or desperate as him. we've had both doves and sparrows set up nesting above a motion detector light on the garage. unfortunately the cats that came with the house ended up getting them. in fact our yard was a dove killing field for a while. i never caught the cats red handed but i scolded them. the cats eventually died off or moved on but the birds haven't resumed their nesting over the light.
