Eastern Sierra Fall Color Report

September 29th, 2007 Author: Steven

Just got back from a drive up to Mono Village outside of Bridgeport and I’ll tell you what, the Eastern Sierra is alive with fall color right now. Everything from the highest areas up Bishop Creek and Rock Creek to the lower areas around June Lake Loop and the Parker bench are turning right now. I can’t remember a time when everything at all elevations has changed at the same time. Hwy 395 is a beautiful drive at this time.

And yet there are still areas that are green too. Lee Vining Canyon is still mostly green. Conway Summit is a mixture of bright gold and deep green. The Twin Lakes area near Bridgeport is awesome right now. Bright yellows and many oranges.

Drove up Bishop Creek yesterday and the middle fork from Aspendell to Lake Sabrina is beautiful. If it’s not peaking right now, it will be soon. South fork is coming along nicely, but it’s not nearly as pretty as the middle fork. I don’t know about the north fork because I didn’t drive up there. It was pretty windy up Bishop Creek yesterday and extremely windy in Bishop Last night. Hopefully the wind didn’t hurt things to much.

If you can get into the Eastern Sierra in the next week or two you will be treated to quite a show. If you can’t make it until the middle of Oct you might be to late.

This will be my last post before leaving on my trip. I won’t be back until Sat. the 13th. If I get a chance I’ll try to post from the road, but no promises.

For those of you who have news about the fall colors over the next two weeks, please feel free to comment on this post to let everyone know what’s happening.

Last Weekend

September 25th, 2007 Author: Steven

Well all of the relatives have went home and it’s just me and Scout again. Things went well on Saturday. Tammy’s memorial turned out nice. Mother Nature was kind to us and it turned into a beautiful day. I was very worried Friday night because we had quite a big thunderstorm come through that brought a lot of rain, thunder and lightning and some hail too.

We put Tammy’s ashes up Bishop Creek where we were married. The trees were beginning to change there and it was very pretty. We even had a little snow spit on us.

I will be heading to Wisconsin next Wed. I’ll try to get some updates on fall colors before then, but I can’t promise anything. I’m still going to be pretty busy this week.

Back country hiking advisory

September 19th, 2007 Author: Steven

If you are planning on hiking the Sierra back country over the next 5 days you’d be smart to change your plans. The local weather forecasters are now calling for 6 - 8 inches of snow above 9000′ by Saturday. A pretty good early season storm is knocking on the door and it will be getting nasty in the high mountains.

Fall Color update and more

September 17th, 2007 Author: Steven

Hey guys,
I got a few extra minutes here so I thought I’d update you on some things. First off I have been up Bishop Creek and up Rock Creek and the fall colors have started. Rock Creek has the most color with the trees on the east side of the canyon really turning right now and many other areas turning also. The south fork of Bishop Creek is beginning to turn above the Table Mtn Campground. The middle and north forks weren’t turning at all.

Some things I’m noticing already is that there are many trees that aren’t changing color, but just look like the leaves died off. There are also a lot of trees that are a dull yellow, orange color and just don’t look that good. We’ll see what the fall brings. Things have started early this year.

Also, the weather forecast is calling for our first dusting of snow later on this week. Right now they are saying Thursday and Friday snow levels could be around 7000′. That should really kick the fall colors and get them going good. I’m still thinking that if you are in the Eastern Sierra the first week of Oct. you should be able to see some nice trees.

Ok now for me. My trip to Wisconsin is still on, but plans have changed. I will now be going with Tammy’s parents and we will be taking the remainder of Tammy’s ashes back to be placed at her grandparents grave site. (Most of Tammy’s ashes are going up Bishop Creek at our wedding site this Saturday.) We haven’t set the date we’re leaving yet, but it will be within the first week of Oct. So instead of the two - three week trip I had planned, it will now be about a 10 day trip and I should be back in Bishop around the middle of the month.

I guess that’s all for now, I will write again when I get a chance. Things are going to be very busy around here this week so I may not get a chance until after the memorial. And as always, thanks to all of you guys for your prayers and loving thoughts. They mean a lot to me.
