Bishop Cam Time-Lapse
Cory has put up two new time-lapse movies from the Bishop Cam, December 11 & 12. The one from the 11th shows the classic Owens Valley rain shadow. Notice how the clouds are coming from the west and the mountains just eat them up. Even though the clouds make it into the valley, they soon fall apart. Bishop rarely get rain or snow when the storm moves over the mountains from the west like this.
The movie from the 12th is totally different though. In it the clouds are coming up the valley from the south. This brings in more moisture since the air doesn’t have to move over the mountains, and sure enough, it leads to snow in Bishop. The snow looks really cool in the time-lapse.
You can see both movies here: Bishop Cam Time-Lapse December 11 & 12
Thanks Cory.
One more thing, if you guys want to see a bunch of pictures from Mammoth, Robin has put many on her blog, Life On the Eastern Slope
Go check it out!

Hey, you’re welcome. It’s so hard to visualize the storms coming from the south to north. Even though they are basically coming west to east, I guess it has to do with the angle and any rotation as it approaches. All I know is that was some of the heaviest snow I have ever had to move off the driveway!!! I’ve moved fresh concrete that was lighter than that snow!!:)
It has to do with how the moisture wraps around the low as it’s tracking in. When the low is in the right position, the moisture comes right up the valley.
Did you live in Bishop on January 1, 2006 Cory? That day we got 16 inches of that heavy wet snow. Broke trees all over town and broke our clothes line :-)I think that was the heaviest snow I ever shoveled.
nope, we moved out here just after that winter, in oct. 06. I’ve heard about that winter, how you all got that wicked wet snow, then it got cold and turned into ice! A friend of mine at work has a nearly flat roof at his house; he shoveled snow off his roof during that little event.
yesterday during the heavy snowfall my wife and I did our xmas card pics in the backyard and the front. i should’ve used an umbrella as my camera was soaked! I had to keep knocking the piled up snow off the lens hood!
Like you said, very very wet snow. I hear that mammoth’s snow was wet too, but not like down in bishop.
