That was pretty much the highlight of the storms yesterday. Most of them went around us to the north and south. There was one nice storm heading our way from Illinois last night, but it drifted south and missed us by about 4 miles.

I made a mistake last night When I said that the tornado reports were in northern Wisconsin, they were actually in the central part of the state in Green Lake County. The one report said there were a few power poles and trees knocked down. The NWS is heading that way today to look at the damage and see if it was a tornado.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge – Tunnel first opened in 1964 and was named “One of the Seven Engineering Wonders of the Modern World”. It’s considered the worlds largest bridge-tunnel complex. The bridge-tunnel measures 17.6 miles from shore to shore, has two tunnels, each about a mile long, that go under two of the most important shipping channels in the world.

Last Thursday evening we decided to take a trip across the bridge-tunnel. Not only did we want to experience the trip across, we also wanted to shoot the sunset from the eastern side of Chesapeake Bay.

Being the smart guy that I am, I shot video of our trip across to share with all of you. It took 25 minutes to cross the bridge-tunnel and I shot video the whole way. I was able to edit the video down to just under 20 minutes. Because YouTube only allows 10 minute videos, I had to cut it into two parts.

A couple things before you watch. First off, please excuse the dirty window. I didn’t think it would show up that badly on the video, so I didn’t wash it ahead of time. Sorry. Secondly, I made a mistake in part 2 when talking about Fisherman’s Island National Wildlife Refuge. I said it was the southern most barrier island in the country. It’s not, it’s the southern most in Virginia.

Hope you enjoy the trip.

Well, our storm took the southern track on Sunday night, so we ended up with only 2.25 inches of snow. It was a wet snow though and stuck nicely to the trees. On Monday morning everything was very beautiful so Lynne and I went out to shoot pictures. While we were driving around, I decided to shoot some video of the area for you guys. Karl had suggested this after the last storm, but I didn’t do it at the time because I was fighting a cold.

I wish I had narrated the video as I was shooting, but I only made a few comments here and there, so here’s a rundown of what you’re seeing.

We start off leaving Petrifying Springs Park and driving east down County Road A. Then we head south on Sheridan Rd driving parallel to Lake Michigan. You’ll notice in scene 3 that I point the camera to the right for a few seconds, that’s the Pike River. We then drive along the lake shore for a ways heading towards the harbor. You can make out the Kenosha Pierhead Lighthouse in the background. When I swing the camera back to the right, I’m showing one of the marinas near the harbor. In the last scene we are driving through the harbor area and heading for downtown. As we make a left and I swing the camera to show the harbor, my battery dies and that’s the end of the show.

Hope you guys enjoy this little tour of our home town. It gives you a different perspective of areas that you seen in my pictures. It was fun to shoot this video. Please excuse the jerky camera in spots, it’s hard to handhold a camera on bumpy roads. I plan on shooting more of these videos for you guys in the future.

I haven’t been out shooting pictures lately because there hasn’t been much to shoot. Most of the snow melted away during our warm spell and what remains is pretty dirty. I did get out to shoot some video today though. The wind was blowing from the south-east so that meant the waves would be up. I found a nice area of ice and waves and began shooting. One of the things I really wanted to capture today was the sound of the waves and ice. It came through somewhat, but not nearly as cool as it sounds in person.

I’ve shown you guys the beautiful side of Lake Michigan. I’ve also shown you the lake when she’s mildly upset. Now I’m going to show you her nasty side. Oh my!!

After clearing our driveway and three of our nieghbor’s driveways today, Lynne and I took a drive along the lake to see what she was up to. What we found was one of the most amazing scenes of wild nature I’ve ever seen.

Lake Michigan 12-19-08 from Steven Bourelle on Vimeo.

In the first scenes of the video you’re looking at the ice that extended hundreds of yards from the shore. This ice wasn’t there yesterday. It moved in and formed over night during the storm. The waves are going under the ice and in some cases breaking at the edge of the ice. Unfortionatly I didn’t get and shots of the waves breaking. They keep doing it off camera.

In the other scenes you’re looking at the large mounds of ice that form the ice shelf along the shore of the lake, (More on this later.). You’re seeing the waves crashing into and creating the shelf. The mounds are 10-20 feet high and made of ice. Some of the explosions of water were easily 30-40 feet high and maybe even higher.

I stood there filming and filming ’cause I was so mesmerized by it all. I think I could have stood there all day a watched. It was truly one of the most awesome scenes I’ve ever seen. This video really doesn’t do it justice.
