I’ve been talking to Eric the Desert Rat for a number of years now. We’ve never met, but have emailed each other many times, sharing information about California photography. It seems like every time Eric comes up to the Eastern Sierra something comes up and we don’t get a chance to meet. I’m sure we’ll try again this summer.

Eric’s web site, Desert Rat’s Photo Galleries, is filled with great images of the Sierra Nevada, California, Arizona, Utah and other western states. He also has a large gallery of wildlife, with many bird images. I think my personal favorites are his panoramic images. He has a great eye for shooting panos. A few of his panos are shot in ways you wouldn’t expect, like his vertical pano of Vernal and Nevada Falls from Glacier Point in Yosemite. I think my favorite is his pano of Half Dome and Clouds Rest from Olmsted Point.
So head on over to Eric’s site and check out his images. There’s some pretty good stuff there.

If you are looking for a wonderful site full of great pictures from around California and beyond, then check out Inge Fernau’s MagicalGlow.com. It’s full of galleries from the Eastern Sierra, Yosemite, Oregon, and much more. Inge also has a blog on her site that she uses to keep her fans up to date on her “Travels for the perfect photo” as she puts it. You can also purchase prints of her work from the site.

I’m hoping that we can hear from Inge as a contributer to CalNaturePhoto. Her reports on the CalPhoto discussion group are always very informative and detailed.
So go check out her site. You won’t be disappointed.

“Nature Alley is dedicated to protecting natural communities wherever they exist. She is involved in many scientific and educational programs, promoting environmental appreciation and ethics.”

If you’re looking for a great resource for wildlife and wild flower information in Kern County then NatureAli.org is a great place to start. Ally’s knowledge of the Kern County area is very impressive. She regularly reports on the hot spots for wildflowers, birding, wildlife and anything else that has to do with wild nature. Just take a look at here Index page and you will see how much time and work she has put into the site. I can’t even begin to tell you how much information she has on her site. Let’s just say, it’s a lot!

I especially love her wild flower galleries. She had tons of photos of wild flowers that are all identified with common and scientific names. And i just noticed that her bird galleries are the same way.

Well, me telling you about it all isn’t going to show you a thing. So I suggest you head on over there yourself and check it out.

Just last night I found the Nature Photographers Online Magazine. It’s ran by the Nature Photographers Network. Here is what they say about themselves; “The Nature Photographers Network™ is an international cooperative network of amateur and professional photographers dedicated to the art and technique of nature photography, and the use of nature photography as a means for generating interest in habitat conservation.”

If you’d like to join the NPN you can from this site. It’s $50 a year and includes all kinds of benefits including a 120-image portfolio. But if you don’t want to join the NPN you can still enjoy the site and many of it’s features. I plan on joining the NPN in the future, but I can’t right at the moment.

I have joined their forums and galleries though. The galleries are pretty cool. You can post a picture there and other members critique them. I posted this image of the sunset from April 1st on there and in the first 15 hours it’s been up I have 212 views and 19 comments. Not to mention the traffic it’s brought to this journal. Everyone that has commented has had good advice for the image. If fact the suggestions made by a few have helped me to look at the image different and I agree with what they say. The only drawback is that by not being a member of NPN you can only post one image a week per gallery. Members can post every 48 hours. But there are 8 different galleries you can post to in a week. So it’s not to bad of a drawback.

I haven’t had time to wonder around the other areas of the site yet. But I see from the home page that they have many different articles and tutorials about photography. They also have product reviews and much more.

So go check it out. It seems like a cool site to hang out on. I’m going to be posting many more images in the galleries. And hey, you never know who might be hanging out there ready to make me famous :D
