Eastern Sierra Earthquake
Laying in bed last night at about 12:24 or so I heard a distant rumbling heading my way. A second or two later the house let out a nice creak and the bed rolled over a wave or two.
“Hey Scout, we just had an earthquake.” I said. Scout didn’t care, he was snoring at the foot of the bed. Another dog in the neighborhood cared just enough to let out a couple of barks.
The earthquake was centered 9 miles SE of Mammoth and was measured at 4.6. That would put it in the McGee Creek area. It has been followed by numerous aftershocks. By the looks of the Recent Earthquake Activity Map there is still a little shaking this morning. Maybe the Eastern Sierra is coming back to life. This is the first quake we’ve felt in quite a while around here.

Yes I heard this one way off in the distance before it finally jolted me awake. One of my favorite past times is to check out that recent activity map. Mammoth has numerous quakes daily, predictions indicate a volcanic eruption in the near future. I remember being in Mammoth one day and I hiked down into the earthquake fault. I later learned there was an earthquake the day prior to my hike. It registered a 5 on the Richter scale. I was week in the knees…
the earthquake fault in mammoth is incorrectly labeled. Geologists have determined that it was created by the volcano as a vent.
