Fireflies!! (Or Lightning Bugs, whatever you prefer.)
Well they have finally made their appearance. I saw my first fireflies two night ago. It’s pretty cool watching them light up out in the yard. The biggest problem is dealing with the mosquitoes while watching the fireflies. Lynne thinks I’m silly, but I haven’t seen them since I was around 7 or 8 years old, I’m having fun watching them.
Wanted to wish you guys a happy Fourth of July. Stay safe out there and have a good time. We don’t have any plans for tomorrow. I’ll most likely spend the evening keeping Scout calm. That’s how I’ve spent every 4th since getting him. I don’t think it will be nearly as bad around here as it is in Bishop though.

Now you need to try and catch the fireflies in a jar…that’s really fun. My nephew did this years ago when we were in Nebraska at my Aunts house….he caught lots of them, kind of fun to bring them indoors and see if they light up a room at night. Of course you can let them go as soon as you are done playing with them.
Hope everyone keeps your animals safe on the 4th of July. They moved our big fireworks show from the Camarillo Airport a few years ago since the animal kennels are in the same area. They just had to many problems with all the dogs & cats……. Our kitty always hid for a week before and a week after the holiday with all the booms and bangs going on.
Have a safe and very Happy 4th of July everyone………
Being originally from Pennsyvlania, we called them lightning bugs (they are the PA state insect btw). My wife grew up in Sonoma, CA and never saw the east coast until we got together. Her first trip to PA in the summer, we were outside at night and she asked what the glowing spots in the air were. I never realized she hadn’t seen lightning bugs before.
Have a good 4th. Hopefully there aren’t too many fireworks being set off here. We don’t need any more fires.
Lynne has never heard them called lightning bugs until she started reading us calling them that on here. She has always called them fireflies. Guess it’s according to what part of the country you’re from. Some call the lightning bugs, some call the fireflies.
I guess it’s sorta like pop or soda…depends on where your from =)
They banned fireworks in Big Bear (except for the ones the professionals put on tommorow)
And I just read news we have a fire burning near Yuciapa. So far it’s 250 acres and not threatening any homes. But there is smoke up here though.
Awesome about the fireflies. I too have never seen one, but this being the age of the internet allows anyone to see these kind of things. Wikipedia has some neat photos of fireflies:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefly
and youtube actually has some cool videos. Go to youtube and type in “Firefly insect”. There’s actually quite a few videos, including some of fireflies in a jar!
i didn’t realize bishop had a problem with fireworks. you’d think they would know better but i guess it’s the same everywhere. in my city, where safe and sane are legal, one of five in the oc, it’s been like a warzone in the past. the city has been trying to get a handle on the illegal stuff with stepped up enforcement and education but there are still too many knuckleheads out there. we’ll see what this year brings.
i don’t know if anyone took note of the link i included in my last post. it was a really good article about an extraordinary hiker. here it is again:
