First Sierra Storm of Season
I’ve been waiting to get an update from MammothWeather before talking about the storm. As all of you in California know already, it’s a big one with lots of moisture and wind. Snow levels in the Sierra are going to be high, but where it snows it’s going to dump. Howard Sheckter is calling for 3.5 – 4.5 feet above 10,000 feet on Mammoth Mtn by Wed. afternoon. The winds are supposed to kick up tonight too. Yesterday they were forecasting winds over the Sierra Crest to be 130-145 mph. Howard said to take 10-15 mph off of that now.
Tioga Pass, Sonora Pass and Ebbetts Pass are already closed. Will it be for the season? Guess that’s in Mother Nature’s hands now. In the past, the National Park Service has reopened Tioga if the weather clears for a length of time. If they receive over two feet of snow from this storm though, they may not bother.
So baton down the hatches California folks. It’s going to be a wet windy 24 hours.

We had some snow flurries this morning, but mostly just drizzling here in Big Bear. Was hoping for a nice long rain to wash off my car. =)
NorCal still has all the “fun” weather….still waiting for it to soak SoCal..has been raining in spots, but nothing as predicted…yet.
My husband and granddaughter and myself are heading up to June Lake next week. Hoping for somewhat okay weather. But we need the rain and snow, so whatever happens will be fine. Down here in Orange County we have had some heavy down pours and more is suppose to hit on the way home from work.
Some of the high-altitude webcams are beginning to show good accumulations of snow, such as the newly re-operating Tioga Pass, as well as Squaw Valley and other Tahoe cams. The Mineral King cam shows a dusting and there’s even a group of deer browsing in the corral in the 12:48 pm capture.
It’s dumping on the Mammoth Mtn Village cam. Snow levels are lower than expected. The Village is 8600 feet.
You’ve gotta love the Hume Lake time lapses today – the Sierra Nevada’s only webcams offering daily and hourly time lapse views – every day! every hour! And now they offer the exclusive Lawn Cam, also with hourly and daily time lapse features. Both cams also offer SEVEN DAY time lapses! Hume Lake is truly crushing the competition – no other Sierra Nevada webcam comes close for functionality and ease-of use!
Apologies of course to the Bishop webcam which certainly has a more spectacular view and does provide time lapse images on occasion. I just like Hume Lake’s daily time lapse features.
Oh I love the rain!! It is raining good here in Santa Clarita… just down the road a bit is the station fire burn area. Lets hope the mud goes where it should…
NorCal is STILL HOGGING all the rain !! OC has just had enough to make everything wet and tacky. Send some of that whopping rain down here – we could use a good hosing off !
Yep, just went on June Lake and Mammoth Lakes Web Cam’s, they are getting snow. Here in Camarillo it’s just been drizzling off and on but it’s now starting to rain at 5:45 PM. They say the worst is yet to come…..sure hope not for all those people in the fire area’s. But but Thursday it’s suppose to be into the 80′s in the Valley’s, so much for Mother Nature.
As much as I wish I could go up again this next weekend for more Fall color, I’m hoping this storm really dumps on the Sierra. I also hope we get a nice steady rain for the rest of the week here in L.A. Not enough to start mudslides, but enough to start getting those reservoirs filled again. I went over Tioga Pass on Sunday and all of the lakes up there were really low. Falls in Yosemite Valley were completely dry except for a trickle over Bridalveil. Here’s hoping for a fabulous snowpack this year.
so far we’re getting more rain than wind here in bishop, w/ .83″ on my guage so far. Haven’t gotten this much rain in quite awhile! Also sounds like mammoth is getting more snow than was thought would happen. Already received a dump alert from the mountain of 14″. Should be interesting to see how much snow fell on the crest near indy tomorrow.
Mammoth reports 14 inches of new snow so far ! Looks like maybe they’ll open before Halloween??
