I’m here!!!

December 5th, 2007 Author: Steven

Howdee from Wisconsin. I made it despite mother nature. I Have been here since Monday, but I didn’t have any internet access until 30 minutes ago. I now have my internet hooked up and I’m ready to go.

We were pretty lucky with the drive here. We had rain all day on Friday with some very heavy rain in Flagstaff Az. But nothing that slowed us down to much. We made it to Holbrook Az Friday night. Saturday brought sunshine and warm temps and wind. All through New Mexico the wind blew. Sometimes a side wind, sometimes a tail wind, but no matter which way it blew and blew. We made it to a little town in Kansas called Platt, it’s about 70 miles from Wichita, and spent  Saturday night there.

Sunday it was cloudy, the wind was blowing hard and it was COLD!! We fought the wind all day Sunday until we got to I-80 in Iowa,  then we finally had a tail wind. By the time we got to Iowa the roads had cleared and there and there was even blue sky. We ended up staying in Cedar Falls Iowa on Sunday night because we didn’t know how clear the roads were in Wisconsin and we didn’t want to take any chances of finding ice at night. When we got to Cedar Falls the temp was 18 and the wind was blowing a good 30-40 mph out of the north. As Tammy would say “BRRR, BRRRRR, BRRRRR, FREAKING BRRRRRRR!!!!!!”

We pulled into Madison about 10:30 on Monday morning. We missed the storm and didn’t even have to deal with the effects of it. We sure saw the effects of it thought. We saw a lot of rolled cars and big rigs.

We got everything into the house yesterday, and right as we finished, the first few flakes started to fall. We got 5 inches of snow last night. They are calling for 2 more inches tomorrow and more this weekend. My downstairs neighbor told me that this much snow in Dec. is unusual and that I must have caused it.

Scout is doing good. He made the trip ok and is starting to get use to the new home. He is pretty interested in the squirrels in the back yard. (Oh by the way, the yard is HUGE!! It is going to be so good for him this summer. I’ll take some pics of the place for you guys.) He doesn’t mind the snow to much. Of course he’s somewhat use to it.

Guess that all for now. I need to get a bite to eat and get to work. It’s currently 17 outside, but in the sun it doesn’t feel bad at all. So I will talk to you guys later.

Hi Steven:

Congrats on making it safely. I’m looking at one of the Madison webcams right now and it looks freaking cold. Being a life long Californian, I’ve never been in anything much under 25 degrees, so I can’t fathom living in a place that cold. I would imagine the sun is somewhat lower in the sky in the winter at that latitude, and of course, goes down a bit earlier - but it’s up longer and later in the summer. All in all a good place for making cheese, right?! Enjoy.

Funny thing is Karl, it was in the teens earlier today, but in the sun it didn’t feel that cold at all. And the sun set right at 4:30. It goes down earlier than that in Bishop because of the mountains.

Interesting. I remember talking to a fellow here in Visalia (central California for our national audience) who was originally from Minnesota. He said he felt colder on foggy 42-degree days here in the San Joaquin Valley than he did on sunny zero-degree days in Minnesota. I’m imagine the dampness of fog figures into that but the psychology of just getting to see the sun must play a part too.

Hey Steven: Happy to hear that all went well on the excursion. All weekend the weather looked pretty bad in the East and Midwest.
Any news from the hospital on the job?

So glad to hear that you made it OK to Wisconsin. I’ve been going on line everyday, several times a day to check on you….
Yes, looks like you are in for a real winter this year. I know Bishop gets a little snow but I think you’ll have several feet of it from the way it’s starting. We are due for a big storm starting tomorrow night and maybe Bishop will get some snow to.
Thanks for the update and look forward to seeing pic’s of your new digs…..

Glad to hear you made it. We had our first snow in Big Bear last weekend. Little more then a dusting. They’re calling for more this weekend. Forcast keeps changing, but I heard anything from 2 to 12 inches.

Hey Steve - Reading all your postings, smiling… and saying… “Thank you, God, for taking care of Steve on his trip!” Hurrah!!! So, for me living in So. Calif. the single diget temps. sound… wow… really tough… but it seems like you are up for all the changes, including the cold. Hope to hear more news… going to take a peak at the cams now. I am the one in the Santa Monica Mts. and as I look out my window, it is pretty cloudy and we hear the reports of rain coming. It has been quite spectacular over the past couple of days. The sun almost has a honey color as it surrounds the warm autumn colors on our fall leaves. You take care! Lisa
