Lake Effect Non-Snow
I’m sure a lot of you came to the site today wondering how much snow we get last night. Well let me tell ya, here at the house we officially got NONE! Yep, that would be none as in; nothing, zero, diddly squat, a big fat doughnut hole. We did get about an inch of rain though, (I can’t give you an official total on the rain since I pulled my rain gauge yesterday so it wouldn’t get buried by all the snow. So much for thinking ahead.)
Lake Michigan was up to her ol’ tricks last night. She kept our temperatures above freezing all night. I said yesterday that this might happen, it did. Though the lake’s water isn’t really warm, (it’s currently 40 degrees) it’s was warm enough to raise the air temperature over it’s surface to just above freezing. The wind last night was out of the east and blowing over the lake, so it blew the warmer air inland a few miles causing us to have rain instead of snow.
When the lake enhances snowfall they call it “Lake Effect Snow”. Since last night the lake hurt the snowfall, I’m calling it “Lake Effect Non-Snow” :-)
If you travel inland about 10 miles you find about 10 inches of snow. Some areas got even more. Madison for example, got 18 inches last night. That’s more than Mammoth Mtn got from this same storm a couple days ago.
I’m a little bummed, I was looking forward to playing in the snow today. But all hope isn’t lost. The wind has shifted to the west, it’s currently 32 degrees outside and snowing pretty steadily. There’s still a lot of storm out there, we’re still under a Winter Storm Watch until midnight and the forecast is calling for 2-3 inches today. We also have the 25-35 mph winds to look forward to this afternoon.

I see that Mille Lacs has frozen over the past couple of days.
You will have snow soon enough Steve……I give you until about March and then you’ll be waiting for Spring as you will have had so much snow.
I give me until Feb. to be ready for spring, snow or not :-)
