Lake Winnebago Lighthouses

July 6th, 2009 Author:

Lake Winnebago is a large lake that sits in Eastern Wisconsin. The lake is roughly thirty miles long and from 5-10 miles wide. At it’s deepest it’s only 21 feet deep, but the lake can still be very dangerous in bad weather. There are four lighthouses on Lake Winnebago. Of the four, three of them are still in operation helping to guide modern boaters.

We were able to see all four of the lighthouses on Friday. The pictures below were taken by both Lynne and I. I’ve included in the caption who’s picture it is.

Fond du Lac Lighthouse

The Fond du Lac light sits on the southern end of Lake Winnebago. It sits at the entrance to the marina at Lakeside Park. This lighthouse was built in the 1930′s and is 56 feet tall. It’s still in use today, but only by the red light on top of it.

Bray’s Point Lighthouse

The Bray’s Point Light sits on the western shore of Lake Winnebago where the Fox river enters the lake. It was built on 1909 and is still in operation today. It currently sits on private land, so taking pictures of it is tough. Lynne was able to get one though.

Asylum Bay Light

The Asylum Bay light is on the western Shore of Lake Winnebago. It sits on an island that separates North and South Asylum Bay. It was built in 1940, the tower is 31 feet high, and this light is no longer in operation. It looks like some restoration has taken place to the light and surrounding area. The book I’m getting my information from shows all of the windows boarded up and says that the foot bridge had been removed. Now there is a foot bridge again and though the windows and door of the light are barred, they aren’t boarded up and you can look into the tower.

Neehna Lighthouse

Kimberly Point Park, in the town of Neehna, is the home of the Neehna Lighthouse. It sits on the north-west shore of Lake Winnebago. The light was built in 1945 and is still in operation today. An interesting thing about this light, the base of the light serves as restrooms for the park. Like Lynne said, “I never thought I’d go potty beneath a lighthouse.” :-)

All in all it was a great day up at Lake Winnebago. We saw some really cool lighthouses and found a couple other really neat places that’s I’ll share with ya this week.

These are beautiful. I see a coffee table book of lighthouse images in your future…

      Thanks Kahlee.
Hmm… Coffee table book is a possibility. I’m seriously thinking about a calender myself.
Also looking into doing an eBook like William Neill does.

the asylum bay light looks like one of the miniature settings on the canal boat ride at disneyland!
