So you want to ice fish on Green Bay?
Here’s something you don’t see every day. I guess it’s one of the dangers of fishing on Green Bay.
Ice fishermen rescued off Green Bay
By Annysa Johnson of the Journal Sentinel
Twelve people were plucked from the ice off Green Bay today after a passing freighter and heavy winds created a 6-mile-long, 400- to 500-foot-wide crack that separated them from the eastern shore, according to the U.S. Coast Guard, which joined in the rescues.
The 12 all had been ice fishing, some about a mile off shore. Still stranded on the ice are at least two trucks and three all-terrain vehicles.
“They’ll have to wait for the winds to shift and hope for hard freeze, and then they can get them back,” said Coast Guard spokesman Charles Wolfson. “And pray they’re still out there and haven’t fallen through the ice.”
Rescue workers from five area agencies, some in helicopters and an air boat, pulled 8 people from the ice between Dykesville and Little Sturgeon Bay. Two were rescued off of Shoemaker Point, and two near Sugar Creek, according to Wolfson.
No one is believed to have fallen into the bay. But the Coast Guard used the opportunity to warn ice fishermen that cracks are possible while freighters are still plying the shipping lanes.
“It’s early in the season and it can still be a safety hazard,” said Wolfson.
I’d love to hear the call to the insurance company if those two trucks fall in the bay.

As I read that and also the posts at the Mille Lacs website I’m still struggling to understand the allure of ice fishing. Sounds miserable to me. As they say, perhaps its an “acquired taste”.
I was watching a TV show about what folks do in the winter back here in Wisconsin and the person hosting the show asked a guy why people ice fish, snowmobile, and do the other things we do for outdoor recreation in the winter. The guy’s reply was that we live back here, it’s a long, cold winter, and if you want to do what you really love doing then you learn to deal with the cold and do it anyway. I have learned that this is true. That’s how I feel about going out and shooting pictures when it’s freaking cold out.
Having said that, I’m still not sold on ice fishing yet. I will give it a try someday and then I’ll let you guys know what I think about it. I would think if the fish were biting, it might not be that bad. If they aren’t biting, it would most likely suck. I’ve fished in some pretty cold weather in the Sierra, when the fish are biting you don’t feel the cold
I’m guessing a little consumption of liquid courage also helps to pass the time in those little huts.
I’m sure it does
Hopefully they caught some fish and can at least eat if they are stuck. I like to fish……but I don’t like cold weather, so I think I will pass on the ice fishing. I’m sure if you have that little shack set up with a nice toasty heater going it might not be so bad. But, if the ice cracks and you are floating away….you’d never know if you were inside the little shack. I’ll stick to fishing along the shores of river or lake.
OMG what a story to tell!! Do tell if they ever get the cars off…. There goes your rates!!
Heard about this on TV last night……pretty wild….not a good way to lose a vehicle. Have met some great people from Wisconsin who retired here in Smith Valley. They have some great cold weather tales to tell.
