January Photo of the Month: Sunset over the Eastern Sierra, Bishop CA
This months photo was taken back on October 7, 2006. Tammy and I had been out to Round Valley taking Scout for a run. As we were coming back into Bishop I happened to glance in the side mirror of the truck and this is what I saw. I told her that we had to turn around NOW! I made a quick u-turn at the Paiute Palace and raced back to Brockman Ln.
I knew from experience that a sunset like this wasn’t going to last very long so I jumped out of the truck and started shooting as quickly as I could. Since what was happening in the sky was the main subject, I composed the image so that at least two thirds of the image was sky. I took my exposure on the sky so that I could get the nice silhouette of the mountains.
Surprisingly, this sunset lasted for about 10 minutes. And it ranks right up there at the top as one of the most awesome sunsets I’ve ever seen.

beautiful, just beautiful Steven. You make me Bishop home sick… as my daughter is traveling through there right now on her way to Tahoe…. Lucky kid… she said she has never seen the snow so low…She is just coming into Bishop, she keeps texing me!! Oh I wish I was there!!
Beautiful……I get those kind of Sunset’s over the Pinenuts here in Smith Valley…..I knew I would love it up here. I saw some great Sunset’s on the beach in Ventura but I had to drive to see them……here I can look out my back door……this is definitely God’s country.
Gorgeous, although you really should thank residents of the San Joaquin Valley for creating the atmospheric conditions that cause those orange sunsets.
