November Photo of the Month: First snow, Petrifying Springs Park, Kenosha WI

November’s photo is from last year’s first measurable snowfall. I shot this at Petrifying Springs Park on November 24, 2008. It wasn’t a big snowfall, I think we only had a couple of inches from it, but it sure was a pretty one. This photo is also the first black and white that I’ve chosen for photo of the month.

I rediscovered this image last week while searching for the photo of the month. I don’t care much for the color version, but I’ve always thought it might make a pretty good black and white. I remember that when I composed this shot, I really liked the contrasting elements that were before me. The chaotic nature of the tree branches contrast so nicely with the simple beauty of the snow covered ground.  In the color version that contrast doesn’t show up to much, but it really stands out in the black and white. I also like the shadows on the ground. A lot of times when shooting snow, the ground becomes a blown out white that doesn’t have any detail in it. The lighting on this day was perfect and these nice shadows were cast on the ground helping to add some depth to the picture.
