For many images you can have greater control over the areas you keep, delete or tweak by using the Select &#62; Color Range function.  In the pull down (at least for PS CS2) there is an option to select highlights, midtones or shadows.  In this fashion you can create individual masks for the areas you're looking to adjust.  It's a method that works with the one you've detailed and it also works independently on one copy of the image.
