Here’s a handy website that has the Sierra Wildland Fire cams all visible on one “page”.

Go to http://www.portervilleweather.org/

On the left side of the page, mouse over “Webcams” and then click on “Nearby Public”

The current image of each of the fire cams then comes up and you can click on the ones that you want to to see a large-size image. Much handier than the fire cams own page.

FYI: The image from the Buckeye Tree Lodge camera was not updated for a while, so I emailed them about it. The owner replied that they’re currently painting the building so they had to take the cameras down, but he says they should be back up within a week or so. He says *both* cameras will be back up - and while they’re not the most spectacular they do give a good view of the river level so I’m looking forward to it!

Truly one of the “missing links” of Sierra Nevada webcam coverage! Now if we can get a cam on one of the waterfalls in Yosemite we’ll have it made. Bonus points if it’s a video cam! Actually as I think about it that brings up a good question for Sierra Visions viewers - what part of the Sierras would you like to see a webcam, where there isn’t one currently. My vote is, of course, a waterfall in Yosemite.

I think that alot of people would agree that the #1 webcam would and should be located in Bodie, given the diverse weather conditions and the huge interest in the park itself.Seeing how the rangers are there 365,24-7 anyway,it wouldn’t take much for the hard working rangers to mantain it. The public would LOVE it!

I was hoping somebody could tell me what the Lone Pine camera is pointing at? And also,is it east or west of 395?

Comment by Steven
2009-03-22 20:57:36

The cam is located on the reservation in Lone Pine, so it’s on the east side of 395 and it’s pointing at the Sierra. Lone Pine Peak is the flat topped peak just left of center, Mt Whitney is to the right of that.

There is no such place as the “SierraS.” The name is already plural and adding an S to a plural is akin to saying “mountainses.” Such a writer said Goudy, will letter space l o w e r c a s e type and steal sheep. Dismantle the pens, release the sheep, and refer to the Sierra or Sierra Nevada.

Just a quick note that if you watch the time lapse of Hume Lake yesterday (Monday, Feb 16) - watch the tree on the lower right side of the view slowly “collapse” under the weight of all the snow falling. Pretty neat.

Today is one of those rare days when the Visalia Weather cam really stands out for showing the glory of the Sierra Nevada from the San Joaquin Valley. Actually now that it’s afternoon, a bank of clouds has formed in front of the mountains - it was much better earlier in the day. In any event the weather should be good for great viewing from this cam for the next several days.

Very cool.
I was just watching the Tour of California bike race and they went through the Sierras today. It was so good to see the foothills and the forest. When they got back down into the valley heading for Clovis, I saw how clear it was and the mountains looked awesome with all the new snow.

Comment by Karl
2009-02-18 18:27:47

Yes, they start out here in Visalia tomorrow morning and then head 100+ miles southwest to Paso Robles. We’re hoping to give them some nice weather in contrast to the rain they’ve had the past few days. It’s going to be cold to start - 35± degrees before the sun comes up, but then should warm into the 60s tomorrow with blue skies. Jeez, I sound like a weather forecaster.

Does anyone know what the little buildings on the Auberry cam are?

Comment by Karl
2009-02-22 11:22:57

Lyndsie:

I believe that each building houses a telescope. The rails that protrude from the side of the roof of each building allow the roof to slide off the building - thereby exposing the telescope to the heavens. The people who operate this facility have an extensive website where you can learn all about it: http://sierra-remote.com/

Comment by Lyndsie
2009-02-25 09:21:14

Thanks. I’ve seen the roofs slid back before. Thought that was cool. Never would have thought they were telescopes though. Went to the website. Good info there.

BTW. Love this site. I visit every day. I agree with the above. We need a Yosemite waterfall cam. That would be awesome.

For the California cams list, here’s a nice complement to the webcams in Marin County that point into San Francisco

http://www.wunderground.com/webcams/jsntg/1/show.html

This cam looks like it’s up on the flanks of Twin Peaks, looking northeast toward downtown, almost right up Market Street. Nice view of the Bay Bridge and Oakland Hills beyond also. Click on the picture and you get a slightly larger version

Rick,
The Virginia City cam streams with Windows Media Player. So you need the most updated version of that along with a high speed connection.

Also sometimes that cam doesn’t like to work with the Firefox browser. I have problems with it because of that. So try using Internet Explorer to view that cam.

The Kaweah River cams page has improved their existing cams and added a new webcam. The cam showing the river (for the kayaker community (be sure to see the sign in the foreground marking the 2002 flood level)) is much improved; their second cam points up toward the Ash Peaks ridge, and they appear to have a new cam pointing east up the Kaweah River canyon, with a distant view of Moro Rock in Sequoia National Park. Go to http://c2.com/kaweah/ and scroll down.

Comment by Steven
2009-03-26 10:40:03

Thanks Karl. I like that Moro Rock one. That’s cool. Got to stand on top of Moro Rock once.

I updated the link so it now goes to the page that displays all three cams together at the top of the page. So now you won’t have to scroll down to find the cams.

Today’s (Mon, April 6) Hume Lake time lapse is classic Hume Lake. Watch for the piece of driftwood that floats up from the bottom of the picture at around 8:25 am, and then drifts off to the west. For a few minutes there are two birds hitching a ride.

Then around 10:50 am watch for the odd wind pattern on the surface of the water that comes down the lake toward the camera and then out of view to the left. Almost looks like there’s an invisible UFO making the pattern. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - Ya gotta love the Hume Lake time-lapse.

The little sheds you are writing about are buildings housing telescopes….Auberry is the ideal location in the United States to view long distance stars, planets and solar systems by high powered telescopes with little effect from city lights.
You can click on view pictures on the website and see their actual work.

The town of Bodie does have a land line running all the way out to Bridgeport, that runs parallel to the main road going in, so I don’t know why the rangers have not installed a web cam yet. If it’s the money, I’d be more than happy to donate a cam that would keep the veiwing public satisfied. I KNOW that there is an incurable curiosity about BODIE, and a streaming webcam would MAKE MY DAY, and alot of others,I’m sure.

I just read that with California’s budget mess, the State is proposing to close over 200 state parks - including Bodie, and the Mono Lake Tufa area. Mono Lake Committee’s website has information on this: http://www.monolake.org/today/2009/05/29/action-alert-mono-lake-bodie-state-parks-proposed-for-closure/

I like the idea of a webcam at Bodie - you’d think the State would be interested - if for no other reason than security - especially if the place gets locked up.

I don’t know that you can Rick. That camera is ran by the White Mountain Research Station in Bishop. They use the camera to keep an eye on things in the Whites. I think only WMRS people can access controls of the camera. You might try contacting them and see what they say. Here’s the link to their site: http://www.wmrs.edu/
