The calm before the storm
It’s the last Friday of April, that means it’s the day before the opening of fishing season in the Eastern Sierra. Today is one of my favorite days of the year. When we use to go up to Twin Lakes for the opener we would get up there on Thursday. Friday would be a day just kicking back around camp, getting fishing gear ready to go, and wondering if there were any fish out there in the lake. A very quiet and relaxing day.
I love that the lake is so peaceful on Friday. Nobody fishing, no boats, Loons and mergansers just taking it easy on the water. If you’re lucky you may see a Bald Eagle or an Osprey. It’s a wonderful day to see Twin Lakes in it’s natural state.
But then Saturday morning hits and all hell breaks loose. I’ve often wondered what the fish think when all of that bait hits the water all at once. It must be shock to them.
Looks like the weather will be good for the weekend. You never know what the weather will do on opening day. We’ve fished in some of the nastiest weather on opening day. Wind, rain, snow, you name it and we’ve fished in it. I’ve stood on snow banks 5 feet deep bundled up like it’s the middle of winter and I’ve wore shorts and tee shirt and been sun burned. Like I said, you never know what opening day weather will bring.
If any of you are heading up the mountains to fish the opener, catch a trout for me. If you’re heading to Mono Village and Twin Lakes, then say hey to my dad for me. I know his spirit will be there fishing in his favorite spot. Find that spot, and you will catch fish.
