When Fall Colors Fail

After yesterday’s fall color success at Pets, I decided to take a run out to Bong State Park today. I had scouted out many compositions that I was really looking forward to shooting. What I found out there was very disappointing. The trees have almost no color at all. Most of the leaves have turned brown and are now beginning to fall. There are many trees that are totally bare.  Here’s a couple of pictures showing it.

I decided to do a little investigating and drove over to Paddock Lake and Salem. I found the same conditions there as I found at Bong. It appears that the trees inland of Lake Michigan are colorless and the trees closer Lake Michigan are the only ones with good color in Kenosha County. Not sure why this is, but I think it might have to do with our cold spell last week. We had a low of 27 here at the house, I know it got colder than that inland. Maybe the harder freeze inland killed off the leaves.

It kind of bums me out, but at least I still have the trees near the lake, and they are awesome right now. I hope they survive the two days of rain that’s on the way.

They have a park named after a smoking device??? And I thought California was the wild place! ;-)

Nope, wrong kind of bong. This one is Maj. Richard Bong. He is the greatest US fighter pilot from World War II. He shot down over 40 Japanese planes and received the Metal of Honor. He was from Wisconsin.
