as a kid and later teen i used to fish a lot at ellery with my dad. sooner or later, with no fish biting, i'd get bored and decide to take a hike up the "bowl". eventually, it would get too steep or the boulders too big and i would head back down.

Thanks Michael, and thanks for mention the "bowl" in your initial response. That really piqued my interest in learning more about the area. Can't wait to go back up, although it looks like they're about to shut down Tioga for the season, so it may be May or June before I can check out the chutes in person. ;-)

Hi Steven...
I vote Virginia Lake, I don't know the proper whether it is Little of Big but the one by the cafe/resort office. I think where you are standing is where they put the row boats.

Thanks...I love these!!

Okay, I recognized Ellery Lake from the image, but I hadn't heard of Ellery "Bowl" which Michael Gordon mentioned in his response, so I did a little research. That "bowl" is pretty popular for backcountry skiing, and it turns out, there are a bunch of chutes you can access by going across the damn and hiking/climbing up. Imagine the fun for those intrepid enough to go for runs on "Chute Out," "Banana Chute," "S-Couloir," and my favorite named chute, "Poop Chute." Hmmmm. . . Wonder what the likelihood is that you could runout of snow and hit gravel or land in the lake?

I believe it's Convict Lake, although I've never seen it with snow! I did come across a bear there on one of our hikes last year.
