Winter Storm Warning for Kenosha

January 6th, 2010 Author:

Looks like we may finally get our first big snow of the season. We have a Winter Storm Warning posted for tomorrow. The storm will begin tonight with an inch possible, but then on Thursday things get interesting as the winds shift and we get some lake effect snow here in south-east Wisconsin. The forecast is for up to 10 inches. I think it’s safe to say that it’s cold enough now that we will get snow and not rain like in the last two storms.

I would say to send at least some of that wind here to blow out our fog – we’ve had three days straight with no sun, while the foothills 25 miles away are basking in 60 degrees. Our low yesterday was 41 and the high was 43. The Giant Forest webcam shows it all too nicely.

Time to move to the foothills Karl.

        Hmmm, you intrigue me.

It’s interesting – this winter I’ve noticed how the Mono Lake basin frequently fills with fog that won’t budge for a long time. Sometimes the cam at the visitor’s center in Lee Vining is in fog, but the air district cam just uphill (near the Mobile Station at 120/395) is above the fog layer in bright sunshine – looking down on the fog blanket over the lake. It’s almost like a miniature version of our valley fog.

The same weather conditions that cause Central Valley fog also create the fog in the Mono Basin. The same thing also happens in Long Valley before Crowley Lake freezes over.
